TECHNOLOGY AND OUR HUMAN HEARTS : What are we living toward?

Deadline: (pitches) Jan 30, 2011.
(submissions) Feb 10, 2011

What We’re Looking For:

Technology is the water we swim in. Our life with the screen promises to reshape human relationship as powerfully as the automobile in the last century. What does the changing nature of on-line life and technology mean for our human, incarnated lives as local and global community? How can it destroy community—and how can it be harnessed to build it?  How is the global divide between the wired world and God’s children who are merely trying to survive playing out? How is it changing our lives and our relationships? What is the growing environmental impact?
Scripture has nothing proscriptive to say to a technological age. We are on new ground here, facing a set of complex choices.  Send us your best musings about technology and any of these areas—or send us your brilliant pitch for a question we haven’t asked.

• What are the pitfalls and what are the unexpected graces of technology in your life? How do you tame technology (or forsake it entirely) to shape the life you want?
• How do you live in a centered way with the increasing demands of technology and its immediacy and expectations? How do you subvert its lure toward gadget consumerism and its perfectly planned obsolescence? How does it affect your journey. How does it affect your attempts to create community?
• What are the spiritual dimensions of technology that affect you? How do you counter them?
• Technology and divides: Technology has made globalism possible, increasing options for global jobs as well as global expectations. What does the digital divide look like 25 years into the computer revolution?  How does it heal or exacerbate generational and class divides. What are stories of subverting its power?
• Technology has changed the face of activism and revolution, currently apparent in the Middle East, but also in other contexts. How is it reshaping social activism for better or worse?
